From Broadway to Cleveland

The History of the Hanna Theatre

by John Vacha

For three generations of Clevelanders, “I saw it at the Hanna” was a bragging point that could only be trumped by “We saw it in New York.” The Hanna hosted such Broadway tours as The Student Prince and the Marx Brothers in Animal Crackers; significant world premieres, including Design for Living and High Tor; and American musical theater classics from Oklahoma! to Hair.

The Music Went 'Round and Around

The Story of Musicarnival

by John E. Vacha

Clevelander John L. Price Jr. opened his Musicarnival in the summer of 1954 with a production of Oklahoma! His venture was one of the last commercial legitimate theaters in Cleveland. In its heyday Musicarnival presented an average of eight to ten shows each summer, with the backbone of its repertoire consisting of such classics as Carousel; Kiss Me, Kate; Wonderful Town; Fanny; Paint Your Wagon; and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Forthcoming volumes include histories of the Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Cleveland Public Hall, and the "Off-Euclid Scene."
